Print Story Two things I'm not very good at

painting are pretty girls and pretty scenery. I'm more the type of person who tries to find beauty in the ugly, (or ugly in the ugly) rather than beauty in the beauty. You can be the judge.

misslake in the park

Dang, looks like the hair style I painted is already out of date.

Hmm, not sure if it still needs some touchups. Also, this camera is giving me some weird colors on this. Maybe I'll sleep on it.

looks like you got the bike about right by 256 (4.00 / 1) #1 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 07:47:07 PM EST
really nice, i like the effect on the bubbles particularly.

sorry, i take that back by 256 (4.00 / 1) #2 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 08:00:38 PM EST
the pedal arm is fucked.

the painting is beautiful though. and it doesn't come across as cheating in that photos-of-puppies way, despite the subject matter.

yeah that's not all by spacejack (2.00 / 0) #6 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 08:44:08 PM EST
the crossbar connects to the stem at the wrong place. I totally didn't notice I did that until I finished. It throws the whole bike off for me when I look at it.

The pedal arm is tricky and weird from that angle :)

Not so good then? Hard for me to tell right now, I've been looking at it too long and I think I'm just seeing stuff they way I intended rather than what it is.

no, it's amazing by 256 (4.00 / 1) #7 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 08:50:27 PM EST
it's just that i built that singlespeed up for misslake from the frame, so when i saw that you had immortalised it, i felt obliged to scrutinise it closely.

i didn't notice the thing with the crossbar at first, but it's clear now that you point it out. regardless, the painting itself is fantastic and how true the bike is to the model is hardly an important element of the whole.

not the BIKE you jerk* by spacejack (2.00 / 0) #9 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 09:07:57 PM EST
I'm talking about misslake. You know, the subject of the painting?? I think I failed again to really capture her likeness. It may not even really work as a portrait some random girl we don't recognize.

Criticism is good anyway. I need criticism.

* yes I am just joking around in case that doesn't translate

hard to say by 256 (4.00 / 1) #11 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 09:38:56 PM EST
the body and legs are exactly hers. especially with that dress, i would recognize them on their own.

i think the arms are a little short, but that is more a general bio-proportion complaint and may even be flat out wrong.

the face is tricky. i recognized her immediately, but i can't say how much of that was the dress, the hair, and that it was by you.

i think the eyes and nose are right but there is something not quite about the mouth and chin.

anyway, regardless (again) of how good a likeness it is of misslake, it is a beautiful painting.

ooh arms too short by spacejack (2.00 / 0) #12 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 09:58:20 PM EST
Interesting. And yeah getting a face right is definitely the toughest. One challenge was that in the reference pic, her hand was partly obscuring her face (so I couldn't quite see it all) and wanted to move it away. So I had to guess a bit, and it also may have thrown off the arm proportion.

I also changed her posture a bit, to have her leaning into the frame more. I think that worked out more or less ok.

Lips by Vulch (4.00 / 1) #20 Thu Aug 17, 2006 at 08:38:34 AM EST

From the nose on up her face matches the laundry day ecstasy photo, but there's something odd with the mouth.

yeah by spacejack (2.00 / 0) #21 Thu Aug 17, 2006 at 09:40:22 AM EST
You and 256 are right. I may yet be able to fix that up. I think he's also right that her right arm is too short but I don't think I'll mess with that.

Criticism by komet (4.00 / 1) #18 Thu Aug 17, 2006 at 05:04:12 AM EST
I'm not sure, but I think the light shining onto misslake comes from a different direction than the light falling onto the bike and the light that illuminates the bubbles. Also it looks like the sun is setting/rising behind misslake.

true! by spacejack (2.00 / 0) #22 Thu Aug 17, 2006 at 09:44:04 AM EST
I didn't think much when highlighting the bubbles. I also unintentionally made the sky fade to a darker colour at the right. Might be able to fix that as well. The lighting could probably be defined a bit better on the bike, benches and the hill to reinforce the direction.

It's a damn fine painting. by blixco (4.00 / 1) #4 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 08:14:33 PM EST
though I got confused by your title / intro...that the two things you weren't good at were painting and  pretty girls. I was all set to argue.

painting women and landscapes by spacejack (4.00 / 2) #8 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 08:55:08 PM EST
are tough for me. Landscapes shouldn't necessarily be so, except for the fact that I rarely do them.

Women on the other hand, even the most uneducated, aesthetically untrained eye can tell when you draw a pretty girl the slightest bit wrong. I have a bunch of portraits I've never posted on the internets because they're just not very good.

But thanks, that's too kind :)

WOW! by reza (4.00 / 1) #10 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 09:18:09 PM EST
It looks awesome!

Seriously.  Whether or not it is what you saw in your mind's eye when you were creating it, what came out of your hand is a beautiful piece of art.

Congrats!!

It's really good by nebbish (4.00 / 1) #17 Thu Aug 17, 2006 at 04:55:48 AM EST
Your eye is drawn to her face and there's loads of unexpected detail there. Actually I think this is one of the best of your paintings I've seen. And yes, she looks beautiful.

I like the perspective. by ana (4.00 / 1) #19 Thu Aug 17, 2006 at 07:22:04 AM EST
The stripes on the fabric nicely show what angle you're looking at it from.

Also, it's just very cool.

Can you introspect out loud? --CRwM
